Avy Stein serves as the chief executive officer of Willis Stein & Partners. He is responsible for managing the affairs of Willis Stein and the firm’s private equity funds which have investments in the education, recycling, telecommunications, energy and consumer areas. Avy is also responsible for initiating investment opportunities, structuring acquisitions, working with portfolio company management teams on an ongoing basis and arranging for the disposition of investments.
Avy’s career has spanned law, operations, and private equity. From 1980 through 1983, Avy was an attorney with Kirkland & Ellis. From 1984 to 1985, he was President of Cook Energy Corporation, an oil and gas exploration and production company, and Vice President of Corporate Planning and Legal Affairs at Cook International, Inc., a conglomerate that was previously listed on the American Stock Exchange. In 1986, he founded and was the CEO and majority shareholder of Regent Corporation, which focused on making and managing acquisitions in the electronic security and personal emergency response industries. Avy also served as a special consultant on acquisitions, dispositions and restructurings to the CEO of NL Industries, Inc. (NYSE) and its global affiliates. From 1989 through 1994, Avy was a Managing Director of CIVC, the private equity subsidiary of Continental Bank, responsible for making and managing private equity investments with John Willis. Together they founded Willis Stein & Partners in 1994.
Avy serves on the boards of directors of Education Corporation of America, FDH Velocitel, Education Partners, Interval Leisure Group (NYSE: IILG), and the successor to Lincoln Clean Energy, which he co-founded.
Avy is a co-chairman of the Development Council for B.U.I.L.D. (Broader Urban Involvement in Leadership Development), an organization that provides career and educational development for inner city youth; a member of the Board of Trustees, former Treasurer, and Chairman of the Investment Committee of the Ravinia Festival; a member of the Harvard Law School Leadership Council of Chicago; a member of the Leadership Council of CAEL (The Council for Adult & Experiential Learning); and a director for the Western Golf Association (Evans Scholars Foundation).
Avy is an attorney and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He received a juris doctor degree from Harvard Law School and received his bachelor of science degree in accountancy from the University of Illinois.
