Recycled Halloween Costumes: Local Students Show How You Can Save Money on Costumes and Help the Environment
Recent Philanthropy Tank awarded student-led group, Green Garments has partnered with Gulfstream Goodwill to show how you don’t have a spend a lot of money to put together a great Halloween costume this year.
Student volunteers will hold an event on Sunday, October 23rd at Gulfstream Goodwill in Boynton Beach to teach shoppers how to reuse clothes to make costumes. The volunteers will service as shopping assistants and offer to help with alterations if needed. Green Garments hopes to change attitudes towards buying Halloween costumes by proving that you don’t need to buy brand new for costumes to be fun, easy, and original. They also say that making costumes from used pieces of clothing is also better for the environment because you can rewear pieces of the costume afterwards instead of buying new clothes.
Green Garments’ mission is to teach Palm Beach County students about alternatives to their current clothing purchase and use patterns, which are harmful to the environment, and waste energy and natural resources. The program raises awareness of eco-friendly alternatives, and focuses upon the recycling, reuse, repair, repurposing, and reselling of clothing.
Philanthropy Tank awarded Green Garments funding and mentorship at our Finals Event in April. At Philanthropy Tank, we challenge, empower, and equip students to develop and execute sustainable initiatives and solutions to solve problems in their communities. Through one-to-one mentoring, philanthropist investors help students execute their initiatives, while increasing their ability to make meaningful change. The deadline to apply for our next class of CHANGEmakers is October 23rd.
